it's a mixed bag, really. some of the worst of spielberg on display, and not much of the best. certainly in the lower third of his catalogue. much of the film feels incredibly forced, phony. soars to what he thought apparently was the ultimate romantic ending, but what was going through my mind in the moment was: "gee, he's really shooting for the ultimate in selfless romance. and it's not working simply because everyone involved is trying way too hard."
i gave it a 6, which is my rating for the average film. bad spielberg is usually average in the field. terrible spielberg is, of course, something else... (i'm looking at you, lost world...)

The script was written by the guy who did the great movie: “Smile”.
Hunter makes the lines dance. Her male co-star doesn’t, nor the director.
She shines, dare I say smile?
It's way too corny, soapy, melodramatic. In short your typical Spielberg film but unlike most of his films, 'Always' is not even entertaining.
One of the worst movies I've ever seen from one of the so called "Hollywood's Top directors".

I actually thought "Always" - like many of Spielberg's movies - was a little corny. The movie it was based on (Anyone? A title?) was much less so.
