The old DVD for this movie, which came out I think in 1999, is TERRIBLE! The picture quality is poor, and it's letterboxed which is terrible for today's 16X9 HDTVs, and it doesn't have very good sound. This movie is in desperate need for a digital transfer with remastered picture and sound at the very least, and hopefully a Blu-Ray transfer too.
It just makes me mad to see some older, lesser movies with better DVD's than this very good movie. My mother loves this movie, and I like it too, but right now all we have is the old crappy DVD.
If anyone has any news on upcoming DVD releases of "Always", PLEASE post it here. Thanks!
I would like to see a SE of Always as well, with Spielberg providing a commentary and interviews with the cast. It should be fitting for Spielberg's personal film.
I have to agree, a SE Blu Ray version would be great. I love this movie, but hate how the DVD looks. I would prefer a commentary with John Goodman, Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter. With a few a nice remembrance of Audrey Hepburn thrown in
If life were only moments, then you'd never know you had one.
Ditto!! It's one I keep looking for in the "new Blu-Ray" lists, and I love the idea of a remembrance of Audrey Hepburn, hopfully by Richard Dreyfuss and maybe Stephen Spielberg.
eh? Without letteboxing, they hack off both sides of the screen and you miss half the movie. notice almost no blu-rays are full screen at all, unless that is the original format like Wizard of Oz
I just got ALWAYS from the library and am planning on showing it to my group Saturday night...I'll have to preview it to see if the reproduction is as bad as you say.
Life, every now and then, behaves as though it had seen too many bad movies
Also remember that the 16X9 format is exclusivly a ratio for HDTV! This means that no, and I mean absolutely NO movies ever made for movie theaters will fit into the screen of a 16X9 tv without some sort of black bar either above and below the picture, or on the sides. If you looking at a movie without black bars it's either cropped or streched vertically or sideways!
I don't bring good news about a new release, just adding my voice to the terrible quality of the DVD. No question that this film deserves so much better.
I`d been looking for this movie, unsuccessfully, and then read this board, so I stopped looking for it. My wife just bought if for me for Christmas. Haven`t watched it yet, but I`m a little nervous. Always liked Always. I`ve got a decent copy on VHS that I copied from the laser disc when it firts came out. Don`t know if this will be better or not. I`ll let you know.
The quality seemed to be just fine to me. The sound was good, the picture was good. Makes me wonder what I was waiting for. Sure, not a lot of great extras, but if I threw out every dvd I have that doesn't have a bunch of extras, I'd have a pretty lean collection.
I can't say if there are several different versions floating around, but I can tell you this about the version I've got:
It says 20556C on the spine, with a little maple leaf, suggesting the C might be for Canada? That is where I am, so that would make sense. The fine print says copyright 2005 - universal studios. It's in english and french and indicates Dolby Digital, 4.1 surround, and Dolby Surround as audio.
The dvd is just "ok", I've seen better DVD quality. But, this is the ONLY version we get. Or the best we can get at this time. It was released pre the whole "anamorphic" thing so it is goofy leterboxed 4:3 that kind doesnt work on modern TVs. So it is very shrunk, and you gotta expand it on modern 16x9 TVs which - in my case owning one of the best known plasmas on this planet - doesn't work out too well.
So, we wait for a new release.... better version on DVD but hopefully a BLU RAY so I can enjoy this flick once before I say good bye and join Pete in the great beyond
I don't know about America with the box set, but on Amazon UK you have been able to order all these Spielberg Blu Ray releases (1941, Duel, Always, Sugarland Express,...) seperately for over a year already. If someone is interested...
I think they are region free (if I'm not mistaken)
