The criticism is irrelevant because the ending shows that what happened in Professor Derek's class was all a nightmare experienced by Allison.

To make it more believable to the viewer, though, the writers had the professor reprimanded by University officials in Allison's dream, which is why he invites the students to his personal abode to conduct further psychological experiments of fear.
