This movie is starting to move up to the very top of the list of great films not released on Blu-Ray.

Bluray may well be on the way. There has been a new transfer of this that just started airing on HD channels. So far only the theatrical cut has aired, but it is very likely this transfer comes from an upcoming Bluray release. 2014 marks the 25th Anniversary of the film so I'd guess it will be out before years end.

if full pressings don't sell enough these days, they should really move forward with BURN ON DEMAND. I bought a forgot old B Movie like that from Universal burn on demand and am very happy I could have it on disc at all. They could do BluRay like that also. $25 for one off burns in a case...

Any idea if both versions especially the extended cut Special Edition shall be on the blu ray as I dont care much for the Theatrical.

The Special Edition is far superior.

Considering that Cameron usually does his own restorations (eg. Aliens), and the special edition is his preferred version, I just can't see him only releasing the theatrical version.

Its a small miracle I watched the Abyss in HD for the first time ever, for the dozens of times I have seen this film it was always with the black bars on the sides. How amazing it was to see it in HD I was lucky to see it even listed on my channel guide before it started on HBO Family.

It was 2:35:1 and looked great so I can't even imagine how well the Blu-ray would look what a tease. It was only the 139 minute regular version but it was still great to see some of the scenes in HD, I hope the blu ray comes out this year and I certainly hope its the extended version or what a disappointment.

If your interested do a search in your channel guide or keep an eye out in the HBO channels.

Since you seem to call people "idiots"

Here's to you: RETARD

There's no bluray transfer yet, so everything you see is either HDTV or DHS rips, NOT bluray.

Supposedly Cameron confirms it for 2017

Let's hope so. It's been way too long.

The Abyss needs a Blu-Ray release (and a DVD Release in the correct aspect ratio)

"Director James Cameron has confirmed that his beloved film The Abyss has been recently remastered in 4K and will be released on Blu-ray in 2017. Mr. Cameron leaked the news while promoting the upcoming 30th anniversary Blu-ray release of Aliens at Comic-Con in San Diego.

"We've done a wet-gate 4K scan of the original negative, and it's going to look insanely good. We're going to do an authoring pass in the DI for Blu-ray and HDR at the same time", Cameron said.

The news was first reported by Variety."

Couldn't agree more, it's always been one of my favorite Cameron films!
