Definitely. though it was very limited before the final episode (#23) of season 10.
I can only think of two early examples:
- S5E15: Deep Space Homer - A chimpanzee sent into space by NASA comes back able to speak.
- S6E12: Homer the Great - When the Stonecutters are singing the "We Do" song, one of them is clearly an alien.
- S6E16: Bart vs. Australia - When the Simpsons are flying to Australia, the camera pans through the Earth's core, showing a multi-armed Hindu-like god flicking switches, seemingly keeping the planet running.
- S6E22: 'Round Springfield - After Lisa gets the local jazz station to play Bleeding Gums Murphy's (BGM) album, the images of BGM, Mufasa, Darth Vader and James Earl Jones appear to Lisa in the clouds.
All of these instances were momentary and did not affect the main story-line.
In S10E23 (Thirty Minutes over Tokyo) - At the end of the episode, as the Simpsons are flying away from Japan, the airplane gets attacked by Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and Gamera, thereby shattering any connection the Simpsons TV show had to reality. That is when I stopped watching, because the quality of writing had hit rock bottom.
