Jeff could have been arrested.

When Kelly worked at the Max with Jeff. Kelly was about 16 and Jeff was possibly in his 20's. I don't know what the laws were in California in the 90's but that would be considered rape.

reply

He would of been about 19 maybe 18 which isnt terrible but still inappropriate

reply

Lmao- rape?? Think you're jumping the gun there, pal. This was one of the most wholesome shows on TV- the producers wouldn't even allow swearing on set. Kelly and Jeff didn't have sex. I'm guessing he was about 19 and she was 16 or 17. Inappropriate, yes. He was her boss. But rape? Calm down.

reply

How can it be inappropriate that he's her boss? She goes to the Max every day and they first met in that episode. Jeff would have to have been hired that day or the day before.

Kelly's imaginary prents wouldn't have made that phonecall.

Wasn't it stated he was a sophomore at UCLA? Which would have made him no older than 20.

How can it be rape, if they didn't even have sex?

reply

I can see one day Jeff walking into the Max - and Kelly goes
"Jeff, have some brownies! I just made them and theyre soooo good!"... then in walks cock blocker Chris Hansen.. "Jeff, why dont you take a seat over there. What are you doing here? And Kelly is HOW old?"

reply

That would be HI-larious.

Jeff didn't care about nothin'.

Let's take a look at facts:

- as manager, dating a subordinate is generally looked down upon. Also, if his superior found out, I'm sure Jeff would have been fired.

- Kelly's got a boyfriend, but Jeff don't give a sh!t.

- the fact that he's an adult, and she's not. Still, he don't care!

Jeff risked his job, physical harm (from Zack, and possibly Zack getting Slater and Screech to get in a few blows), and jail time / his reputation! But the man went ahead anyway, all in the name of some high school poontang!

You got the wrong guy, mang. I don't come off no banana boat.

I agree Jeff was a jerk. He cheated on Kelly with a girl named Jen. Kelly caught Jen and Jeff dancing at the Attic club and he told her that she is a great girl but he is not ready for a commitment right now. I felt bad for both Kelly and Zack in that episode. Kelly and Zack were an amazing couple and she left Zack for Jeff. That's really sad...

reply

They dated for a short period of time and I don't think they ever had sex...

reply

@ detataandrea - Not true. There was a lost episode that never aired where Jeff brought her back to his frat house and slipped her the date rape drug GHB in her beer. She passed out and well... he had his way with her on the pool table as his fraternity brothers watched and egged him on.

reply

forgetting the real laws... dating is grounds for arrest when you are talking about an under age child and anyone ABOVE age of 18 in California. even if the age is 1 year or less than the age of consent..... the entire US world pretends like a 17 year old has no idea what sex is when an 18 year old does.

so without actual intercourse taking place... uppity parents and lawyers will take their 'innocent' 17 year old girl going out and kissing good night their 20 year old 'guy friend' as DATING and then both barrels are drawn.

If this were present time, then I could see that Jeff could potentially faces charges, however back then when the show was made, a lot of teenage girls and college guys dated each other and it was not considered a big deal like it is now. Statutory rape wasn't even mentioned or thought of in those times. Parents trusted their kids enough to let them date college age kids and never gave it a thought to charge a college guy for dating their high school daughter.

'Arrested' is a bit of stretch, and 'rape' even more so. You really oughtn't be throwing the latter word around with respect to a KIDS show that depicted no sexual relationships. Also keep in mind that these relationships both on TV, and in real life were less controversial back in the heyday of the show. Not because age of consent of laws didn't exist (they did), but there just wasn't as much parental strictness around dating. There was more of an independence in the way that Gen-X era teenagers went about their lives. The social taboo we have around high schoolers dating younger (college-aged) adults is really more of a post-2000 or late-90s thing.
(Despite that, I'm sure this type of dating happens even now.)

When you think about it though, most 16-17 year-old girls are probably not being raped or molested by their 19-20 year-old boyfriends. As long the age gap is more on the narrow side, it's really hard to make the case that these relationships usually have a 'victim', whatever other issues there may be (not saying there aren't any). However, if you can provide an example of some guy being jailed for simply for having a 3 years younger girlfriend, let me know. Because as far as I know, without proof or a compelling case made to police that sex took place, there is little grounds for arrest. Parents can certainly use THREATS of police to end a relationship, which probably does happen often, but actually GETTING an arrest made on the grounds of a 3 year age difference is a different story.
