What about Zack Fair from Final Fantasy VII? Did he exist? Never could follow that crazy story none.

Yes, yes he did. In fact he had his own spin-off storyline.

But yes he did, and Cloud assumed his identity. Not really sure how he got his "powers" though, or training. Cloud was just a foot soldier.
