Episode "Raped" is terrible and sends the wrong message

Episode is surely not original. Raped girl not believed, boy is local hero....yeah, we've seen it countless times. The fact that the boy is acquitted means the townspeople is behind him and his family. So when the two fight at the end, with no witnesses yet again, a jury will find in his favor even more so the second time around and she goes to jail for assault. What a stupid episode and a terrible message conveyed. I hope women's groups at the time protested it.

It's reality though, that's kind of the point. No one wants to believe that boy wonder over here could do anything wrong. He's good looking and popular, girls throw themselves at him all the time so why would he need to rape anyone? So the only logical reasoning is she wanted to have sex and then changed her mind afterward. That's reality, it happens all the time and is part of the reason why victims don't report rape when it happens.

I agree but the basic emotional premise was that the guy was too embarrassed to admit he got beat up by a girl.

If this were reality, even in 1980, he would have reported it to his parents and the police and there would have been a second trial.

I'm not so sure. Aside from the embarrassment, I think an argument could be made that the same sort of prejudice as far as not believing the victim there might well happen with the hero. Who would believe a girl could have beaten him up?

There'd also be the question of what was he doing at her house.
