Exam in first episode

In the first episode of "Mr. Bean", Mr. Bean is seen taking an exam. What is this exam for?

Given that it is a subject test (Trigonometry or Calculus), it sounds like an A-Level but why would he or any of the adults be taking a test meant for secondary school students? Given the subject matter and the fact that Bean is not any of these: a test for accountants, doctors, or lawyers.

I am a Yank and thus am not familiar with testing procedures in the UK but in the US, only a person say, going back to community college, would be taking those tests but even still, they would never have a choice between two subjects.

I've been seeing Bean since the 1990s when I was a little kid but I still don't understand to this day, what that test is that Bean is taken. Thanks for the help!

I've always wondered too. A-Levels are traditionally taken at 16-18 at college. My guess is that Bean has maybe done an adult learning course where you can study A-Levels even at an older age. Bean's life and career has always been a bit of an enigma, so I wouldn't worry too much about it :)

Maybe it is supposed to be like a GED exam where adults go back to further their education. It is supposed to be funny that Bean takes the wrong exam.

There's various types of adult education courses in the UK which people take for all sorts of reasons - as a hobby, to develop or change career paths, to retake subjects they struggled with in school etc.

One of the most renowned providers of such courses is the Open University which allows people of any age to study for all levels of university qualification through a mixture of distance learning and examinations.
