This was my dad's favorite movie. Seems like a lot of dad's agreed.

I'm reserving it on blu-ray for my parent's at our local library. My dad loves westerns, and he immediately perked up when I told him I was watching it.
When I returned home from college for Christmas in 1999 my Dad gave me his Lonesome Dove VHS because he upgraded to DVD. I had never really even heard of Lonesome Dove up to that point. About two years later I had a room-mate who was really into Westerns. He thought it was cool that I had Lonesome Dove. I told him that I had never seen it before and asked him if it was any good. Well, he ended up convincing me to watch the first segment. After that I was hooked!
Shame on me! I guess I needed someone other than my uncool dad to introduce me to Lonesome Dove. Fortunately, after I got married, I was able to hook my wife on Lonesome Dove as well. Although it would certainly be fair turnabout, I hope that I can share Lonesome Dove with my own kids someday. I figure since I've got 3 sons (4 kids in all) that the odds are in my favor that at least one of them will come around to it, right? The oldest of the bunch is 4 right now so time will tell I suppose.
Lonesome Dove may not be to everyone's liking. But I sure wish everyone would at least give it a try like I did. You never know... you may be missing out on your new favorite flick.
Its hard to believe 1999 is so long ago! I read something by another fan of Lonesome Dove whose father watched it many times. His father was a kind of 'Woodrow' type, close-mouthed, NOT in touch with his feelings and difficult for his kids to understand. The son really related to Woodrow's character and it helped him to understand his father much more.

shareYup. My Dad loved this. He could watch McMurtry's stuff anytime. But, I doubt he would have watched Brokeback!!
shareMcMurtry helped write the screenplay of Brokeback from someone else's story but it is not true McMurtry though they really needed him to get the language, costume, details right.
shareYou are correct.It's Proul's story. It's hard for me to wrap my brain around the fact he wrote Terms of Endearment. Not his genre, but he nailed the female characters.
