I think Clara might having had a tiny crush on call but he I guess loved Maggie. Would call had married Clara if they had done a lonesome dove 3.
shareI don't think so. Call didn't seem the marrying kind. He hated weakness -- his own doubly so. And his need for a woman in his life bothered him because he viewed it as a weakness. Maggie loved Call; but I think Call perhaps only tolerated her because he felt he owed it to her. Even then, he stopped going to see her and didn't seem interested in Newt. Even after Maggie died, Newt was left to live with a Mexican family until Gus (not Call) went down to them one day and got Newt. Call accepted his being part of the household, but never, ever admitted out loud to Gus or himself or Newt, that he was Newt's father. He could not bring himself to do it.
Clara was a very strong-willed woman and did not respect Call. Whether she ever "had a crush on him" or not would be irrelevant. In this one way, Clara was actually like Call -- she made her decisions with her head; not her heart. She loved Gus but married Bob. They would not have made a successful marriage.
It's a wonder that Call and Gus were close friends and partners for decades, considering how different they were.
