Angelica Huston

I liked her at first, but as the movie went on, she became this mean spirited b*tch. Also, kissing another man in front of your kids is shameful, but kissing him in front of your dieing husband is about as low as one can go. Any thoughts?

I think Clara had a good heart overall, but she was just too blunt and outspoken. Tact was not one of her gifts.

And besides, if Woodrow had given in to her demands to have Gus buried at her plot, she'd still treat him like *beep*

OP, Clara didn't change. She was always who she was, blunt and outspoken. She loved Gus. She never stopped. She likely loved her husband, but not in the way she loved Gus. She was IN LOVE with Gus.

But she chose not to marry him; and probably for good reason. Didn't mean she stopped loving him. Kissing him in front of her girls was not shameful. It just showed them an aspect of their mother they didn't realize was there. And poor Bob probably never knew anything. He was dumb as dirt even before the horse kicked him in the head.

Clara was a good woman. A hard worker. She loved her children. She'd been through grief, lots of it. She was tough. And she was kind to take Lorena in the way she did.

I separate the character and the actress on this.

The character I don't like but do appreciate what she brings to the story. I don't think her anger at Call is justified at all and she does come off as "man hating" at times. But the story would be lessened if that character wasn't there. Gives me a reason to sympathize with Call for instance.

Angelica Huston I thought was the only miscast in the entire movie. I don't think she is a very good actor to be honest. Or maybe she is average and being surrounded by all the great actors in LD made her look bad here.

I agree with this. Her character was fine at first, but she was so hateful to Woodrow when all he was doing was carrying out his friends wishes. Her true colors were shown when all she could do was berate Woodrow for Gus not marrying her. And Huston was miscast. She was the only character that was.

I think her hatefulness toward Woodrow about taking Gus' body back to Texas is because of deep grief.

I am a funeral director and I see this quite frequently. Some people just don't deal with grief well. They lash out at people and say the most hateful things just to make themselves feel a little better.

I once had a son of the deceased cuss me like a dog and say that I failed at every aspect of my job and the State should revoke my license. His sister bought me a thank you card and wrote a lovely note saying how helpful I was and that everything was just how they wanted it to be (they had some special requests they wanted). One of them is not telling the truth. I choose to believe that it is the one who took the trouble to go to a store, buy a card, write a lovely note, and mail it.

The way you wrote that implies that you think the one who sent the card is the one NOT telling the truth!

I had to read that twice, since that was my interpretation too.

I like AH just fine in L Dove. Even if her character gets to be unappealing (and I haven't seen LD since it was new, but I ran across it on Starz), we can't hold that against Ms Huston. She's not my favorite actress, but she doesn't seem all that bad, either.

I'm not a woman much less Deanna Durbin, but the old-time glam-shot appeals to me.
