So what made-for-TV masterpiece got LD's Emmy?

All these years later, I still can't believe it was shut out.

Yeah, that is hard to believe. I would have thought this a slam-dunk choice to win the Emmy. I haven't watched it but War and Remembrance won it. Lonesome Dove did win several Emmys, including best director.

It was My Name is Bill W. A biopic about the cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous.

I really like this thread, though I feel completely stranded. Did War and Remembrance win best picture or the My Name isn't Gus M?
