Did anyone else see this in a theatre?

Hell, did it even HAVE a legitimate theatrical run?

I ask because I went to a test screening for this flick when I was in high school, circa late 1987/early '88. Our school was right down the road from a movie theatre so their employees would often stop by the school's cafeteria to hand out passes to students for free screenings.

Anyway, I loved the movie. I went to quite a few of those free screenings back then and you never knew what movie you were going to see till it started, so when I realized that I was finally getting a horror film (my favorite genre; almost all of the other free screenings I went to were for either comedies or dramas) I was like "All RIGHT!"

I remember filling out the little comment card they passed out at the end of the film ("What did you like about the movie? What didn't you like?"), where I raved about how bloody the vampire sequence was and how hot the girl who played "China" was. I still wonder if that ever got back to her. ("Hey, Michelle -- looks like some geek in New Jersey thinks you're hot." Haha.)

I don't remember "Waxwork" ever getting played in my area again after that test screening, but some time later I rented it when it was released on VHS and I remember being totally P.O.'d that a lot of the gore I'd seen during the test screening (especially the vampire scene) had been edited out. I was like "Dude, they ruined it!"

Happily, it appears that the version of "Waxwork" on the double feature DVD from Artisan Entertainment must be the original unrated cut that I saw back in the day (the "R" rating on the DVD box notwithstanding), cuz there sure seems to be a whole heckuva lot of splatter included that I don't remember from the "R" rated VHS version. Of course it's been a long time since I last saw the film, so my memory may simply be faulty. Either way, it was fun to see "Waxwork" again after 20+ years.

I saw it at a film festival in 1988 in London and that version was longer than the UK rental tape or the R1 double bill dvd. It never had a theatrical release in the UK but was a big video hit.
