Why couldn't Alice be part of their conversation/announcements, instead of having Alice go look for the pies.

I've always wondered the same thing. Also, if the considered her a part of the family, why wasn't she sitting having Christmas dinner with the family instead of working?

How many pies did they eat that night? There wasn't any left on XMass day.
