Has anyone noticed that in several posters of the movie Satsuki is depicted in the famous bus stop scene next to Totoro without Mei but with Mei's hair (in color and hairstyle)?
Even the main photo featured on imdb has her looking that way.
Why is that happening? Could it have anything to do with the mentioned trivia about Miyazaki having initially created a single daughter?
Correct. Miyazaki originally envisioned one protagonist who would have been about 7 years old. After realising that a single main character wasn't enough to drive the story towards the intended climax, he split it into the two girls - Satsuki (10) and Mei (4) - and the rest is history.

Strange, however, is why Miyazaki (or the studio) decided to keep the original one-girl drawings as promo material or even yet as the official movie poster.
