So, this is my first amine from Hayao. Hes pretty darn good! I liked it.
Is this one of his better or weaker films?

reply

I'd say it's in the middle. Imo, the best ones are Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Castle of Cagliostro. They are all good though. My least favorite being, Howl's moving castle or Ponyo, but Howls is pretty popular I think. Enjoy them.

TOTORO is probably his strongest work in terms of accessibility. It's quintessential Miyazaki in very contained and succinct manner. Which is to say it's a shorter film, because even at his most succinct and ardent Miyazaki is a lyrical and gentle storyteller. It's got the right balance. TOTORO is like the all-around Super Mario.

If you prefer his other work, it's probably because they're more specific to taste.

For instance, I would say SPIRITED AWAY was his best film, with PONYO being probably my favorite. I make the distinction because SPIRITED AWAY has a better story and is more conventionally animated, whereas PONYO hits me right in the childhood feels. But both films are rather niche, as opposed to the most accessible TOTORO.

I think that Totoro and Spirited Away are his best movies.

But all of them are great.

It's definitely one of his best.

Can't stop the signal.

I just recently watched this also for the first time. I found this story very adorable and touching. I love how Mei repeats everything people say. Her character is perfectly written like a kid her age.

Of the other movies we've seen so far like this we also really enjoy
Kiki's delivery service
The secret world of Arriety
Ponyo

Howl's moving castle
