I don't buy the theory.

I'm talking about the one about TOTORO being the incarnation of death, and that the girls die at the end. The TV host was very specific about all the details (including the lack of shadows at the end), but I just think they're red herrings.

There are two main reasons why I don't buy it:

1) Right after visiting their mom, the girls go back to town and meet with the grandma and the boy. They hug them.

2) Of course the girls left the corn by the window without saying hello to their parents. It's not because they can't. It's because they would have to explain how they got there. Not just the hospital, but the window in the second floor.

No, nobody does. It was just some kid trying to be clever. Best ignored.

the girls had no problem at all telling their parents about totoro and all before, why wouldn't they tell them about the cat-bus as well? it seems like a very strong theory to me. i buy it. i actually think it makes the movie better, more meaningful.

So they can explain how they got the corn all the way there and disappeared? I don't totally buy the theory myself. The slipper thing is kinda interesting though.

Obviously they wouldn't put that in the movie - the theory is based on speculation. It's been denied by Studio Ghibli, but there are similarities to the Sayama Incident, which actually happened in 1963. Apparently the sign on the Cat Bus translates to 'Graveyard Road,' which is probably why people started on this theory in the first place. Obviously in the movie, it wouldn't be that dark and they wouldn't end it on a dark note.

I don't necessarily believe it either, but it's interesting.
