I don't think so. He humbly mentions in the commentary that he didn't think it would do well, and in fact did not do well when released in theaters, but did great on tv. He also mentions that he had this story in his head after doing several movies.

It is one of the first anime movies I've seen in recent times, and I think it is a great example of how animated movies can be for the family. Typically when I read something like that I role my eyes. There are so many horrible "family movies" , but I think there is enough animation and wonder for the children, and enough substance for adults.

Depends on who you ask, but it's always been one of my favorites. In fact, it seems to be the favorite of many, especially given how Totoro is the Studio Ghibli mascot. Enjoy Miyazaki's other films when you get to them.
