Mel Gibson's terrible accent.

I've never seen this movie before today. I didn't know Mel Gibson was from Australia until the 1990s because I never saw Mad Max until then, so he's usually great at a U.S. accent, but his accent sucks in this movie. In this movie, he barely tries most of the time and doesn't try the rest of the time.

I just pretended that the character was from Australia, but he had lived here for a long time and had sort of gotten rid of the accent but not totally.

Mel Gibson was born in the USA. His family moved to Australia when he was around 12.

Thank you for that. I didn't know.

However, that only makes it more curious as to why he can't do a good American accent in this movie.

I don't know what you're talking about. I'm watching the movie right now. His accent is actually cleaner than it was in Lethal Weapon a year earlier.

Ha, I always thought he was supposed to be Australian in the Lethal Weapon movies because he seriously made no effort to sound like he was from somewhere else. In this film, his "American accent" was definitely inconsistent. It didn't ruin the movie, but... it was a distraction to say the least.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Sounded fine to me; I didn't notice anything. In LW there was a couple of times I heard the Aussie accent but, he's so sexy it doesn't matter how he talks, lol.

"Guys like you don't die on toilets." Mel Gibson-Riggs, Lethal Weapon

Where the character is from is pretty much immaterial for the movie.

What films in the 80's and 90's was he great at doing a US accent?

He sounded more Australian for the majority of those two decades to me.
