Why the name Tequila sunrise?

Just wondering, why they used that for the title.

reply

Could it be because at the end of the film Mac returned alive in the early morning after a night of drinking tequila with Carlos.. just a theory

I think the movie ending would have been better if Gibson had died in the fireball explosion at the film’s end, bittersweet like the Taste of a Tequila Sunrise

reply

When MacGwire is in Nick's office listening to Mac and Jo Ann on the restuarants phone, she says something about Mac having another Tequila Sunrise.

There is a Tequila Sunrise in the backround when Gibson and Russell are talking on the swings

Uh, that is NOT a sunrise, it is a *sunset*. This is California, remember?

If the sun had been rising, Kurt and Mel would have been seen in detail instead of strong backlight casting them as silhouettes.

I always associated the color of the sky in that scene with the Tequila Sunrise cocktail.

also, the tagline for the film was " A DANGEROUS MIX " which could refer to the actual drink, which is made up of 3 parts, which could relate to the love triangle of the 3 lead actors.
Plus, as someone has said, Mel drinks tequila throughout the movie.

reply

About half way into the movie Mel Gibson is seen relaxing with a pitcher of Tequila Sunrises

reply

i don't think it was one specific moment: the explanations given in the other posts are all correct. i think the title of this film was meant to be a theme throughout.

That's the only way it makes sense to me. I had no idea why they called it that until they showed Mel Gibson chilling with a Tequila Sunrise, with a pitcher of them behind him.

on the back (or front) of the video box there's a glass of TS sitting on the bar but to my knowledge there's very little reference to it during the movie though Raul Julia (steals the show as usual, see Havana) & William Wallace are snorting lines & doing shots on his yacht near the end.

reply

He's also drinking one at the bar at the restaurant when his table is ready -- the night Joanna is not there and is out with Nick.

reply

It's Mac's favorite drink. He's mixing them when he is sitting there drinking. That's my guess.

Because it’s simply a cool name.

because they couldn't get the rights to "Two Men and a Babe"

Maybe they liked The Eagles Song of the same name? That's all I think of when I see the title of the Movie. Sometimes I mistake it for some Eagles concert, but then, they would include that type of thing in the title, wouldn't they?.

That's brilliant. plus its also just a really cool name for a movie, that hasn't been used before.

I think it also might refer to the particular look of the Southern California coastal sunset so richly captured by the late Conrad Hall's cinematography.

reply

I wasn't necessarily implying that the script was written with Hall's style in mind, just that Towne might have chosen the title in order to, in addition to your observations, refer to the particular cast of colors given off by the beach's sunset/sunrise. Then again, it's also possible that the cinematography just so happened to find a perfect sunset.

Towne is always a pleasure to listen to on commentary tracks, and as someone who's lived in the area pretty much all his life, he definitely captures L.A. like no one else.
