Worth checking out?

I would say yes. It is a very understated, simple production. Most of it transpires in a radio studio surrounded by windows, and Stone makes good use of reflections to allow us to see how the main character, a radio host, is reacting to the subtle emotions expressed by his crew and his ex-wife.

It doesn't have a typical plot that develops to a climax. Though it is set in Dallas, it appears to be at least loosely based on a Jewish talk radio jock in Denver. There is some interesting exploration of what makes this guy tick, some dialogue that is like what keeps some people enthralled with the political and social commentary of shock jocks, and some good acting. If you're looking for action, this isn't the movie, but this movie can make a person think about a number of things. It is about the interesting phenomena of talk radio, an interesting character, and, though not expressly so, an interesting news event.

I'm a fairly stingy grader, and I'd give the movie about an 8 of 10. It stays with you for a while. I likely would consider it among the ten best American films that came out in 1988.

I know this may not help you, 1 year and four months later...BUT! I just bought a copy from Best Buy for $5.99...so I'd say it's worth it.

I'm running my airport, my way, Mylanta!

Ditto.

"Is this a joke? Because if it is, it's both funny and well-executed."

i saw a bit of it, couse of all the new crap rolling today i always tune in when i see an older movie airing. didn't get around to see the whole thing, i just saw this turkey tripping around in the studio and it looked pretty aged. but i think i might like it if i got hooked on it properly.

i'm going down south,
where the women treat me right,
lack of warmth at home,
i'm going down south, where the women please my soul,
i've been here for so long, and most every day,
the chilly weather suits yours way,
and i'm going down south,
where the women treats me warm,
doc, south bound i go,
i'm going down south,
where the women treat me right.
