the birth
what was the problem with the birth?
shareThe baby was breech - it was coming out feet first instead of head first.
shareactually breech means butt first not feet first and they weren't able to turn the baby around and the baby's heart beat started to drop so they had to do a c-section

Yes, I have to agree with disagreeing.
There are many different breech births. Complete or Full Breech (legs are crossed and bottom is down)-- I guess...who knows what will come out first in this one. The Frank Breech is where the bottom comes out first, the baby's legs are almost straight up with their feet by their head. Then the Footling Breech is feet first (guess it could be one or both feet). And, I'll have to agree with you again, even if you have a breech, it doesn't automatically mean you have to have a C-Section. My mother did not have me by C-Section, and I was a Frank Breech birth. This was over 30 years ago, for the record. They can try to turn the baby several times, maybe they're successful, maybe they're not. And then sometimes, in very few cases the baby just turns itself right before showtime.
Acutally you both are right quoted from Encyclopædia Britannica Online
"Passage of the lower extremities or the buttocks through the pelvis first, called breech presentation"
Since my son was breech, I looked into it a bit. Straight from wikipedia, which is just like I originally read it four years ago:
* Frank breech - the baby's bottom comes first, and his or her legs are flexed at the hip and extended at the knees (with feet near the ears). 65-70% of breech babies are in the frank breech position.
* Complete breech - the baby's hips and knees are flexed so that the baby is sitting crosslegged, with feet beside the bottom.
* Footling breech - one or both feet come first, with the bottom at a higher position. This is rare.
* Kneeling breech - the baby is in a kneeling position, with one or both legs extended at the hips and flexed at the knees. This is rare.

God, that scene makes me cry!!! My sister-in-law had a very similar experience, my niece was breech, and wouldn't come out, and the baby's heart rate started to drop, because the cord was wrapped around her neck, so they had to do an emergency c-section. My brother said that was the scariest thing he's ever gone thru. It all turned out fine, she's almost 10 now, and really, really healthy! Kevin B. crying in that scene just kills me!!

Also there was a conversation in the film where Kristy's mum talks about the women in the family have a small pelvis which would make a breech even worse.
