This Woman's Work

Since it was a song specifically written for the film, why in the world was it NOT nominated for an Oscar? It was the best song in film that year, by far! Forget "Let the River Run." Yeah, I'm a woman who looks up to strong, ambitious women (and enjoyed "Working Girl"), but I find that song so annoying and repetitious. "This Woman's Work" stirs the soul and just touches a chord deep within that not many other songs can.

Simply put, I just don't understand. One of the many Academy blunders, I guess.

"Then where does the power come from, to see the race to its end? From within."

I don't know about Oscar contention (I never really "got" why/how any of these awards are doled out), but I do agree it's a wonderful song. Very few people in America seem to understand Kate Bush's genius... I guess that's OK for the rest of us who do.

One of my favorite songs; hard to listen to it nowadays, though. My Mom went into the hospital w/ an aneurysm the night I saw the movie for the first time, now every time I hear the song I'm reminded of that scary time. She made it, though, and was with us for nearly 10 more years. Great song tho. (Oh, did I get off track? Sorry!)

The poster is correct. Hughes sent Kate the final edited scenes and she wrote the song exactly to what she was seeing. I can't find the quote, but she did say she wrote it very quickly. Besides appearing on the She's Having A Baby soundtrack, a slighly different mix of the song appeared on her album The Sensual World.

Here's a bit of interview with Kate talking about the song.

Q (to Kate). Have you been doing other projects besides the album?

A (Kate Bush). I've been mainly concentrating on the album and catching up on my life a bit but I did write a song for a film by an American Director, John Hughes. The piece from the film is extremely moving and I really enjoyed writing to it. Let's hope when the film is released (hopefully some time in '88) that you get to see it. The director has a very distinctive style (he directed "Breakfast Club" which I really like) and I think this, his latest film "She's Having A Baby" is well worth a watch.
