Abby drinking wine?

I may just have 'viewed' the scene wrong, but it looked to me like Abby was drinking a glass of wine at the dinner with David and her hubby. Why would someone who was so desperate not to hurt her baby and risk a miscarriage drink??
At first, I thought it was a water glass but her water glass was next to it.

Anyone confirm or tell me I saw it wrong?

I wondered the same thing myself. She had a wine glass and a water glass. I think it was just an error in the set because her "wine" glass had a lemon floating in it. I've never seen anybody drink wine with lemon... but I could be mistaken.

A glass of wine won't hurt the baby. I'm not saying i'd drink if I were pregnant but one glass on occasion won't hurt. Any doctor will tell you that.

There's a lot of debate about whether it's safe to drink alcohol while pregnant. The "National Institute For Health And Clinical Excellence" in England says that moderate drinking might be okay after the first trimester, but they still warn that it's not advisable. On the other hand, the "Society Of Obstetricians And Gynaecologists Of Canada" says that no alcohol should be consumed during any stage of pregnancy. Since nobody can say for sure what effect alcohol will have on the fetus, it makes no sense to endanger your baby's health.

Personally, my doctors told me to avoid alcohol completely when I was pregnant. There was no way that I was going to take a chance of harming my baby, so it was an easy choice. We now have a healthy baby boy.

As for what was in Abby's wine glass in the movie, maybe it was just a non-alcoholic spritzer (e.g. fruit juice plus Perrier or club soda). When David asked for a glass of water, she did mention that he should try the bottled water, so we know that she had some.

I was kind of put off by that scene at first, until I talked to my mother. She told me back in the 80s her ob told her to drink a glass of wine before bed to calm her nerves. I actually have found out it was not unusual for women to consume small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy prior to the 1990s when large amounts of research were conducted on FAS.

You are absolutely right. Twenty years ago moderate drinking was not considered dangerous for a pregnant mom or the baby. Now we know different, while the is still a debate if one glass of wine would be dangerous every now and then. But since she had already had a miscarriage in the movie; in today's world her Dr would not let her drink at all.

Not only 20 years ago. I was pregnant in 1996, 2000 and 2004, and on doctor's advice I drank 1 glass of wine every day. I now have 3 very healthy children.

My grandmother (an RN), was told by her OB/GYN, to drink a small glass of red wine each night before bed. This was in 1940 and she followed this advice for all three of her pregnancies. Each of her children were/are perfectly healthy, above average in intelligence and have copious amounts of common sense.

I've also heard that a small amount of alcohol, after the first trimester, won't harm the baby since the areas of development at that time aren't affected by alcohol consumption.

Sorry I can't give more "evidence" than that.

Just my two cents!
