Demi Moore's Performance
I wondering if I just didn't like Demi Moore's acting performance, or I just found the character she played grating my nerves because of her self-absorbed hysterics all through this film.
Any thoughts?
I understood her hysterics, but she got on my nerves before she learned of her fate. She was almost 100% baby obsessed, and that was annoying. She tried to KILL HERSELF just because she had a couple miscarriages??! Sure its traumatic, but you are young, beautiful, have a great home and a loving, successful husband.
Get a career, make some money so your hubby doesn't need to work so hard.

Exactly,her character was totally self -absorbed and bordering on narcissistic. I would be very concerned if the fate of the world as I know it was dependent on this person's actions!

It was the eighties, this was very typical YUPPIE behavior/characterization. It showed a slightly older version of some of the characters she played in Brat Pack movies.

I don't know if you've ever noticed the marks on Abby's wrists. She'd attempted suicide before, most likely due to a miscarriage. It's not about being "young" or "being beautiful", it has to do with wanting a baby. Is it baby lust? Perhaps, but Abby wanted a baby. Nothing you can say can change that some women just want a child. There are a ton of women out there who want their own biological babies but are completely incapable of conceiving and giving birth. One case in point, actor Hugh Jackman and his wife, Deb, have given many interviews on their struggles to conceive. They finally had two children via surrogacy using her eggs and Hugh's sperm. Sometimes it just doesn't happen and to reduce this down to "sure it's traumatic, but you are young, beautiful, have a great home and a loving, successful husband" just doesn't cut it. Women who want babies shouldn't be made to feel that's all there is to their lives if they want a child of their own. As for Russell working so hard, he's an appellate lawyer. They customarily work hard due to the caseload of appeals cases due to either wrongful convictions or inadequacy of counsel to judicial error. This isn't about "making some money" it has to do with HIS job...you know that thing he likely went to law school to do?
