If a US citizen is researching abroad and dies, I'm sure the body would be sent back to his home country, no? I understand a lot of people in this film had alterior motives, but I don't think that everyone involved in his burial did.

Yes, their remains are returned to their native land, & initially, in the movie, that was what the doctor intended to have done with Dennis Allen's remains, until that creepy police captain said everything had already been arranged.
So the doctor & nurses on staff, left everything to the police captain's control, thinking that he was sending Allen's remains back to the USA.
