How Do The Scarecrows Come To Life? (POSSIBLE SPOILER ... I THINK)

Or rather, how did the Fowler boys end up as scarecrows? I know the commandos were muttering something about satanic symbols but I don't think it's actually said the Fowlers were satanists or whatever. The vibe that I've gotten is that for whatever reason they were transformed into scarecrows (the three hanging scarecrows shown over and over again are obviously the faces of the three people in the photograph), but did this happen before or after the property was "condemned"? Also, there are three obvious grave markers for what would presumably be the three Fowlers, but if so, who buried the last one to die?

One of the strengths of this film is that it doesn't answer any of these questions specifically (which is why a DVD with a director's commentary is so woefully needed) but it seems like all of the commotion going on is a bit more than three scarecrow zomboid rednecks could cause -- and the three scarecrows with "faces" all remain hitched to their posts, meaning that there are other zomboid scarecrows wandering around the corn patch other than the three Fowlers. Or so it would seem.

According to William Wesley; on paper, there is much more a back story. If i remember correctly they had to trim a fair amount of the original screenplay due to budgetary issues.

OP:If there are any other scarecrows lurking around apart from the 3 farmers then I imagine they are victims of theirs who were killed and then brought back to life as a scarecrow by them just like the characters we see in the film.

I always thought that the filmmakers, more or less, decided to leave it ambiguous to the viewer. I had a hard time figuring it out myself when I first saw it. Then, on subsequent viewings, I developed a theory that the cornfield itself was over a gateway to Hell, and because these people on the plane were criminals, the scarecrows hunted them and tortured them for their sins.
