I saw this and really didn't understand what is going on and why it's rated so high. Dustin Hoffman's character Raymond looks like he's retarded or something's majorly wrong. Tom Cruise's character Charlie seems normal and he wants to put up with his brother Raymond? Why didn't he just leave him in the mental hospital or wherever he was? At the end Raymond says he wants to stay with his brother so I guess that's what they did at the end. Charlie then sees him off on a train, to where? Maybe I missed something that I didn't get, but maybe it's one of those films you have to watch more than once and really pay attention.

Rainman was Charlies brother. Rainman was autistic. Their father died and left everything to Rainman except the Buick. Charlie wanted the money. Charlie took his brother back west. Charlie could not deal with the issues of his brother. Rainman went on train back to the care home.

I think the real question is; who's more retarded, acriser or Raymond? This is actually an extremely close call. This movie was extremely easy to follow. Someone who watches this movie and is more lost than the character who is mentally retarded is very telling.

Raymond has a condition called autism which is explained in the film, as is why Charlie wants to take him away. And at the end they asked him if he wanted to stay with Charlie or go back to the hospital, and Raymond answered yes to both. In other words, he was incapable of even making a simple decision. So they decided it would be best to keep him in the home.

All of this should have been easy to follow in such a simple film where it is all spelled out clearly. You should never use the word retarded again, unless you are describing yourself.
