is there any place i can get this movie spoken in its original language with english subtitles?
im one of those ppl that really prefers movies in their original languare, perhaps someone can tell me how well the english spoken version is...do you think i would enjoy the original a lot more as i would normally, or is it an exception?
There really isn't a whole lot of dialogue, it's much more visual. I'm the same way when it comes to foreign films, prefer orignal language and read subtitles, but this was ok.
I guess deep down I wish I could've seen it in the original language but I still think it's worth it.
original language is swiss, whether a copy with subtitles was ever made is a matter up for discussion, there should be a strictly swiss language film out there somewhere, and there isnt much dialogue so one would only have to learn a couple words

shareI have to aggree with that remark. I have seen the movie now, and it really didnt matter all that much that it wasn't in the original language. This of course being CZECH, just as Svankmajer is himself. Please don't write stuff that you think you know, but have no clue about. Swiss is not a language.

In Switzerland they speak german, french, italian and romansh.
And second Jan Svankmajer is Czech, so original language is off course also czech.
So, is there a copy out there in the original language?
It kinda sets me back whenever I see the moving lips and hear english when I know that's not the language she's speaking. I'd feel more comfortable hearing it in its original form.
Since there are few words spoken, it'll be easy to make my own subtitles.
Stuff like this reminds me of "Movie Poop Shoot.com" from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

I am going to say something I never thought that I would...
I think this movie works better dubbed.
I generally hate the dubbing of foreign movies - any other time I would prefer subtitled to dubbed. However, I saw the English language version of this first and it is what I remember. Also, I don't know if it would be as strong (for us, anyhow) in a different language... there's just something about the way that the (very few) lines are read that we would lose part of the experience with a foreign soundtrack. For example, the fact that 'Alice' voices all the characters... I don't know if we would pick up on that as clearly if it was subtitled.
However, they really should have put an optional Czech language option on the DVD, so we could compare versions if nothing else. It seems a little lazy to leave it off.
I have seen it in Czech with English subtitles, on SBS television (Australia) some years ago. It was fantastic, I NEVER got sick of "said the white rabbit", the way she said it the lines had such a hypnotic, quirky quality that fit right in with the film. I'm not buying it with English audio only, to me that wrecks it entirely. Why couldn't they put the original audio on it as an option, like every other "foreign language" DVD on the planet?
Actually I just realised why. It's because they re-shot the lip closeups to match the English!! They would have to re-cut the film to make the Czech fit again. Bah!!
Maybe there is a Czech version with NO subtitles. I'd buy that.
