Who actually likes the English dubbing?
I've noticed a lot of complaints on this board over the English dubbing in this film.
Usually, I'd probably agree with you all. I am completely of the opinion that, in almost all circumstances, dubbing is about the worst thing you can do to a film.
Yet, I can't help but love the English voice-over. Yes, I suppose it's the only version I've ever had a chance to see, but it just fits the feel of the film so well, and it's so utterly quotable. This goes for Svankmajer's Faust, too (although I believe that the English version of that is as valid as the Czech one, as they are both dubbed). Frankly, even if a Czech language version of Alice surfaced tomorrow, I think I would still have to make the choice to watch it in English. Although, it is a real shame that viewers aren't allowed to make that choice and compare them - we should by rights be able to see this magnificent film the way it was intended.
I still love the English dubbing though.
