I want to start a petition...

...to make this film properly available on DVD in the UK! I am dying to see this film all the way through, instead of short clips on Youtube! Copies of the film are only available in Region 1, which is mightily unfair in my opinion! Why should the Americans get all the good DVDs? Who's with me on this?

reply

I agree that we should be able to view this film on DVD, but have you tried looking for a VHS copy? I've just got my hands on one and although it isn't amazing quality it does the job.

As I was saying, I'm a woman and can't be taken for granted

reply

That's the rub...I don't have a VHS player.

reply

you can watch it for free if you have a netflix subscription... www.netflix.com i'm sorry i don't know if netflix is in europe....

reply

They have it in it's entirety on Netflix if you have that in the UK? I bet any mail-service movie site would.

reply

My film studies teacher has a region 2 copy as we watched it in class on the dvd player we have, which I'm presuming is region 2.
No idea where he got it though, but it looked pretty old.
Maybe it was discontinued in the UK?

reply

Get a multi region dvd player they don't cost much. Then you won't have that problem again.

There is no region 1 DVD of this film – the North American DVD is all regions so it will play in North America and Europe and everywhere else. The DVDs of Svankmajer's Conspirators of Pleasure and the Alice-influenced Blood Tea and Red String are similarly free from region encoding, though the box and most Web sites incorrectly label Blood Tea as region 1. There is, however, no version known which has the original Czech dialogue with English subtitles.

I bought the dvd when I was in Brno last year, it's in czech... but it makes it only crazier :)

reply

does it have english subtitles?
also, forgive me if i am being really dumb, but where is Brno?

reply

It has, and Brno is the second city in Czech Republic, Svankmajer's country.

reply

you can watch it full length (two parts) here:

reply

You CAN buy it on DVD in the UK. From www.moviemail-online.co.uk, a really great website!

Sadly its the *beep* english dubbed version, how the distributors who released it could've vandalised the film so shamefully and not bother to at least include original czech audio/english subtitles as an alternative for people who can't stand poor quality cheesy dubbing is beyond me!

grrr!

Just in case anyone is out of the loop other than through this thread, as you'll know if you've been reading the others for this film it is now available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc (sold only together in a dual format edition) domestically in the UK, with both the original Czech version subbed and the English audio. I recommend to using www.find-dvd.co.uk/blu-ray/Alice/1107255.htm to speed up finding where it's cheapest online (though as it's a domestic release one should be able to order it in-store as well).
