He's the best character. It said there was on the netflix description =(
shareHe >>sorta<< blended the Cheshire Cat with the caterpillar. By giving the caterpillar those big grinning dentures for a mouth, I think that was his way of working it into the story. But it's a stretch. I agree that the Cheshire Cat should have been a main character, as well as the Walrus & the Carpenter (the oyster story would've fit perfectly with the recurring theme of gross dead things).
shareIN the books, the Cheshire Cat was more of an AID to Alice then the other creatures. For this particular movie I don't think he had a rightful place to be honest, having some kind overtly helpful and light-hearted character would have ruined it for me.
shareI know, howthe-light-getsin! What the hell is that about? When I read that Svankmajer gave the Cheshire Cat a "warped makeover" I was really excited to see him. And when I didn't I was bummed. He's by far my favorite.
~Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Weep, and you weep alone.~
they also left out the calf/turtle creature and the gryphon.
shareAs much as I agree with you, I got to the end of the movie and was like "I feel like something was missing." I think the Chesire Cat really brings the story full circle.
shareIt occurred to me that Alice's dis-embodied mouth was meant to take the part of the Cheshire Cat. Svankmajer must have wanted to incorporate the idea somehow, and found this way to do it. He must have known that the mouth is slightly exasperating in the same way as the Cheshire Cat was. Thinking about it this way might help those who don't like the mouth.
