I wonder if somebody can help me and give the lirics of that song "Do re mi fa sol la ti do / I go / I stay" played in that movie. It also appeared in "Scent of a woman" when Al Pacino tries to kill himself. I need it for a paper at school. Thanks in advance! Val
Let's start at the very beginning A very good place to start When you read you begin with A-B-C When you sing you begin with do-re-mi
Do-re-mi, do-re-mi The first three notes just happen to be Do-re-mi, do-re-mi
[Maria:] Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti [spoken] Let's see if I can make it easy
Doe, a deer, a female deer Ray, a drop of golden sun Me, a name I call myself Far, a long, long way to run Sew, a needle pulling thread La, a note to follow Sew Tea, a drink with jam and bread That will bring us back to Do (oh-oh-oh)
[Maria and Children:] [Repeat above verse twice]
[Maria:] Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do So-do!
[Maria: (spoken)] Now children, do-re-mi-fa-so and so on are only the tools we use to build a song. Once you have these notes in your heads, you can sing a million different tunes by mixing them up. Like this.
So Do La Fa Mi Do Re [spoken] Can you do that? [Children:] So Do La Fa Mi Do Re [Maria:] So Do La Ti Do Re Do [Children:] So Do La Ti Do Re Do [Maria:] [spoken] Now, put it all together.
[Maria and Children:] So Do La Fa Mi Do Re, So Do La Ti Do Re Do [Maria:] [spoken] Good! [Brigitta:] [spoken] But it doesn't mean anything. [Maria:] [spoken] So we put in words. One word for every note. Like this.
When you know the notes to sing You can sing most anything [spoken] Together!
[Maria and Children:] When you know the notes to sing You can sing most anything
Doe, a deer, a female deer Ray, a drop of golden sun Me, a name I call myself Far, a long, long way to run Sew, a needle pulling thread La, a note to follow Sew Tea, a drink with jam and bread That will bring us back to Do
Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do Do Ti La So Fa Mi Re
[Children:] Do Mi Mi Mi So So Re Fa Fa La Ti Ti [Repeat above verse 4x as Maria sings]
[Maria:] When you know the notes to sing You can sing most anything
[Maria and Children:] Doe, a deer, a female deer Ray, a drop of golden sun Me, a name I call myself Far, a long, long way to run Sew, a needle pulling thread La, a note to follow Sew Tea, a drink with jam and bread That will bring us back to
[Maria:] [Children:]
Do . . . So Do Re . . . La Fa Mi . . . Mi Do Fa . . . Re So . . . So Do La . . . La Fa Ti . . . La So Fa Mi Re Ti Do - oh - oh Ti Do -- So Do
Here are all the lyrics that I know from Jimmy Durante's to "Did You Ever Have the Feeling?"
"Did you ever get the feeling that you wanted to stay - then you'd get the feeling that you wanted to go?"
Thanks a lot rycki1138! It's Jimmy Durante's song I needed. Unfortunately the time to deliver my paper at school is already over, but the song will still come at handy. Stay gorgeous
from a google search, here is the answer. (If anyone is still interested)

Did you ever get the feeling that you wanted to go, But still had the feeling that you wanted to stay. You knew it was right, wasn't wrong. Still you knew you wouldn't be very long. Go or stay, stay or go, Start to go again and change your mind again. It's hard to have the feeling that you wanted to go, But still have the feeling that you wanted to stay. Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, si, do. I'll go. I'll stay.
(Note: I could not find a direct quote. I quoted the above from memory - but I may be off on some of the lines. At any rate, the quote is close - please forgive my inaccuracies.)
This song was originally sung by Jimmy Durante in the 1942 movie "The Man Who Came to Dinner", with Monty Woolley, Ann Sheridan, and Bette Davis.
In a much later movie, "My Stepmother Is an Alien", Dan Akroyd and Kim Bassinger sang that song, giving their impression of Jimmy Durante.
Of particular interest is when Jimmy sings "Do, re, me, fa, so, la, si, do (known as the "diatonic scale). Note the "si". At first I thought he was in error for not saying "ti". As it turns out, he was exactly correct in saying "si", as it was "si" in the original version of the song, where the first letters were from a biblical quote (one of the hymns to St. John -
Ut queant laxis (Can't say where they got the "do") REsonare fibris MIra gestorum FAmuli tuorum SOlve polluti LAbil reatum Sancte Iohannes (SI - not TI)
