"If you're ever in Des Moines, don't send me a postcard"


This went over my head. What is this supposed to mean? I know earlier in the movie, Hackman's character made a similar remark, but what is this supposed to mean when she says it at the end?

She's saying she doesn't want to hear from him again, once he leaves.

She'd rather be a pleasant memory to him (and him, to her)... than suffer the charade of him sending a postcard (phony attempt to stay in touch).

In his kitchen conversation with her earlier in the film, he told her that his wife left him because he was constantly gone -- calling or dropping her a postcard-p from all over the Country -- including placesd

She's basically telling him she wants to see him in person if he ever comes to Des Moines.
