How Were Anderson and Ward....-SPOILER

able to get the men convicted? I'm not clear on this. The kidnapped mayor spilled his guts to the FBI specialist that kidnapped him, then afterwards Ward tells Anderson it's hearsay and they can't get them on federal charges. Then there's the "set up" at the church with all the klansmen meeting (don't know exactly how it was set up), then they take one of the guys, Lester, and tell him that they know all about that night that another guy told the agents exactly what Lester said and did, then there was the charade with Lester supposedly being kidnapped by his own fellow klansmen, but it's FBI agents pretending to be them. I'm confused.

They systematically got them to spill the beans, starting by scaring Lester into thinking that he needed their protection.

reply

Okay, that makes sense, because Lester didn't keep quiet while they were being tape-recorded at the church. But how did Agent Bird know of Lester's "they only left me a *beep* but at least I shot me a *beep* which is precisely what he said at the beginning when the three workers were murdered? He repeated himself at the church?

reply

I believe that line was provided by the mayor who was coerced into a confession earlier.
