The Klan Member's Meeting at the Church at the End--SPOILER

I wasn't clear on this. Was this a setup Anderson and Ward planted with a tape recording to bring all the men together to confirm what the kidnapped mayor had told the FBI "specialist"? Did all the men get together and talk about that night before Townley arrived?

I think it was part of the overall plan to crack their solidarity ("the rattlesnakes are starting to commit suicide"), like the fake attack on Lester. I don't think they necessarily got any confessions in the church (even Deppity Pell was smart enough to say "shut up!"), but it sure made them nervous and paranoid - and scared which = "I wanna deal."

They were trying to get a public confession out of the bunch but while it didn't work, they learned who the weakest link was: Lester. So they went for him afterwards.

The reason I'm asking is because Agent Bird is reciting a line he claims Lester said, which he did at the beginning of the movie, which he did. "You only left me a *beep* but at least I shot me a *beep*
