Anderson and Mrs. Pell

Did anyone else hope something would come of the chemistry between Gene Hackman and Frances McDormand? Her character was so good-hearted; she deserved more than to just stagnate in that racist dump-hole end of the movie.

Even though I felt for her character, I thought the romantic undertones between the two were just right, any more and it would have perhaps diluted the intense drama and pace of the movie.

I get what you mean. I've seen this movie many times and the same thought usually crosses my mind at one point. But really I think it is that very thing, that they didn't do anything about their mutual attraction, that makes that part of the story so good... that we were hoping for something that wouldn't ever happen. In real life, most people at some point in their life will cross paths with someone amazing that they simply cannot be with romantically, for whatever reason, and such truths makes it all the more intense and agonizing at the same time. That part of the story was very realistic, in my opinion.

I sure wish Anderson swept her off her feet and took her away.

well, i like the idea, it would be nice if they had ended up together, two decent people in an ugly surrounding, and they sure seemed to have the hots for each other in their encounters, by the way, i wish a lip reader could tell what she says behind the window in her hair saloon, i think i can make one word out... notice hackman wears a hat in the beginning of the movie then hardly ever again until the end of the movie, when he grabs the macho boy by the balls was some really good acting there, i thought while i was watching, is he doing that for real? because the tough guy looked to be in such extreme pain. when hackman visits two older people in the house in the beginning and the burned guy lays on the bed, i thought that was a dead man at first before he made some movement. there are several times i have to look away from the screen, like when those kids get chased and the beating of the female who gave hackman information where the bodies were buried, this movie reminded me of the 1967 movie "in the heat of the night", the more i think of it they have quite a lot of similarities.
