I'd like to know this as well. The film was shown in theatres yesterday morning (at 11am at select Cineplex theatres in Canada, for only $2.50), but they projected the DVD version of the film. It was full screen (square, more or less). Was this film made in full screen originally, never widescreen (horizontal rectangle) ?
The picture was inconsistently grainy at certain points and...this thing just needs a re-mastering. Someone needs to clean a reel of it up and make it look as good as it originally did (better, if possible). Has there only been one DVD so far, in most regions ?
The theatre really needed to jack up the sound a bit too, but oh well.
Was cool that there were other groups of 20-somethings who came for the nostalgia, not just parents with their kids. Amazing to see it again, especially on the big screen as I originally saw it.
The best version is the digital laser disc version from 1988. It's the most full quality original copy, the DVD copy is horrible with messed up colours and contrasts, even worse than VHS copies.
The original version back in 1988 shown in theaters was standard 35mm aspect ratio (16X9) This version is occasionally shown in high definition on movie channels like HBO and STARZ. I ripped the HBO HD broadcast to my own personal Blu-Ray so I basically have the original version as shown in theaters.
In other words, the best version to buy is the one shown on the movies channels. Simply keep an eye on the listings and activate your movie channels when it shows (assuming you don't already have them).
I have a widescreen recording from Channel 4 HD who show the film here. Have it saved on DVD so can watch any time. The broadcast is very decent on my 50 inch LG TV.
