oh im so confused

theres about 80 different books about who jack the ripper was and loads of aDVDs

can anyone say any good one that i should get?

reply

I think this is IT. Michael Caine plays a better investigator than anyone for a long time, and the guy who turns out to be the ripper is kind of credible, unlike many of the theories about it being a woman or some poor maniac...

ty but also is there any good books on it?

'The Complete History of Jack the Ripper' by Philip Sugden is the best overall book on the ripper. And check out the website: http://www.casebook.org/index.html

The best book About Jack The Ripper and the best recommended by researchers is-
The Jack The Ripper A to Z by Paul Begg,Martin Fido and Keith Skinner
This book lists the complete A to Z of all the suspects all the witnesses and just about everyone linked to the murders. It doesnt offer a solution but it draws in all the true facts and leaves you making your own conclusion,it proves what suspects it couldnt have been and therefor narrows it down to a few.
I dont think it is still in print but it is highly sought after and to my surprise goes for about £45 on ebay,i was lucky my husband found my copy some years back,so i take really good care of it now.
Although there is an updated version of this book by Paul Begg which is a lot cheaper as its still in print.I havent read it yet so i cant really comment although i know researchers still refer to his original.

I agree...A to Z is the best...I keep mine in my purse or beside my bed. For accuracy this is by far you best choice in books...You can also go to casebook.org,(as another poster has already suggested), it is an excellent online resource for researching JTR. You can order the entire contents of the website on cd for $20+shipping. Well worth the investment!

The Complete History of Jack the Ripper by Sudgen
Jack the Ripper A-Z by Fido

those are the 2 you should get. then, if you want to zone in on a particular suspect, find a book on them. I've not seen any real DVDs that are worth getting.

I suggest getting 'The Complete Jack The Ripper' by Donald Rumbelow.

Its a very impressive book thats still available in its 2002(?) updated version. It was originally released in 1975. For me, at least, it was the perfect starting point as it goes into detail about life in the East End at the time and then explains the events in great detail as well as examines each suspect in as much depth as is possible. It includes excellent pictures and photographs from the time.

Id also suggest the very rare book 'The London Nobody Knows' by Geoffery Fletcher. It takes the reader on a tour of London before all the old buildings were torn down.

As for DVSs...Id suggest, for an introduction, getting The Discovery Chanel's 'Jack The Ripper' DVD...This is the IMDb link:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0249610/

Id also suggest getting 'The London Nobody Knows' (based upon the book of the same name) which is narrated by James Mason who is also your tour guide during the 1960's show. While it doesnt specifically deal with Jack The Ripper the documentary takes you around the sites of East End London of old before most of the buildings were torn down and some of the murder sites altered forever. Infact, in one all too short segment Mason takes us into the Hanbury Street home and back yard where one of the murders took place, even pointing out where the crime was committed (but this is the only reference to Jack The Ripper in the show, well worth it for that alone). I found the documentary helps to get things into prespective.

This Documentary isnt available officially, however there are a few people selling region free copies on DVD on eBay, or at least there were last time I checked.

Below is the IMDb link to its page:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0061914/

Also, the Jack The Ripper site others have suggested is an amazing place to check out...And well worth the effort and cash to purchase the CD they offer as well.

Whether or not you subscribe to the James Maybrick theory, the diary is quite a good read even just to say that you've read it.

There is a documentary based on it as well which is very good and available on DVD.

For a laugh-Stephen Knight's "Jack the Ripper-the final solution" (1976). The main "source" for all the claptrap about Gull and the "Royal conspiracy" which is seriously warping people's notions of the killings in providing the "plot" for 3 Ripper movies. A lot of people believe it's true, but it's a product of pure imagination. It is like the bonkers theories blaming Lewis Carroll and Dr Barnardo!

It really needs slapping down-hard!
