childrens' report on Lincoln

this had been bugging me for years: the report they had on Abraham Lincoln was wrong at the very beginning. They said he was born in a log cabin in Illinois...wrong! He was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky, and not Illinois. He lived in Illinois as an adult, and represented that state (and technically Kentucky as well) when he ran for president.

Wasn't Zachary Taylor born in a log cabin? I think they got their presidents mixed up.

reply

A lot of presidents used the country life log cabin kind of thing for campaigning ideas to win working votes, so it's hard to tell.

Dude its obvious that the children dont know what theyre talking about. I mean thats whats so funny about it. So who cares what the inaccuracies were. Nothings funnier that 2 white kids spewing radical propoganda!

reply

that is the point of the scene...satirizing (sp?) the misinformed propoganda that is fed to young black kids in the usual blaxploitation film...and besides...its freakin hilarious

so...you dont want a fish sandwhich?

The misinformation is either beside the point or part of it. And it's not just spoofing what black kids were taught. I was the white step-child of a black activist in the 70s, and you could have taken this scene almost directly out or our lives. Condidering the politics & social relationships of the time, I know we weren't the only ones, either! This is part of what makes that scene so hilarious to me.

Dude, I imagine you in your mom's basement rocking back and fourth going:

"Linclon was born in a log cabin... Wrong!"
"Lincoln was born in a log cabin... Wrong!"
"Lincoln was born in a log cabin... Wrong!"

-Not everyone; just maybe 99.999999% of them deserve to be flatheads.

reply

Hmmm...I think the kids getting it wrong was the point...since they thought all white people were the same. Remember it's a huge satire; just think of the part when that white man with the thick moustache was supposed to be a black lady!! lol

Too HOT To Handle!!! Too COLD To Hold!!!

A famous movie critic once criticized the Disney movie "Pocahontas" because it had so many historical inaccuracies in it.

Another critic replied "Just how HISTORICALLY ACCURATE can a movie be that has TALKING SQUIRRELS in it!?!"

It's a spoof for Pete's sake!

As a KY resident I've always been bugged by that Lincoln bit. I've often wondered if Wayans doesn't knows where Lincoln was really from or if it was an intended bit of misinformation.
