Why do reviewers give away the secret?

There is a secret we learn in the first half of this movie. Why do big name reviewers like Ebert give it away? It's really unprofessional. Don't read the 'external reviews', just watch the film if you get to. It's a great film. Reminded me of Ruby in Paradise, Five Easy Pieces, and a little of Lost in Translation.

What is the secret you refer to? That Lillie is Ally's mother? It seemed pretty obvious from the beginning that this was the case. Plus, the VHS box gave away that plot point.

I didn't mind this, because this is more a character study than a film dependent on surprises. And Judy Davis gives a superb performance, as always.
