Chevy's Masterpiece

Before eliciting lots of negative responses let me say that this is just my opinion but I think Chevy Chase has been one of the biggest wastes of talent ever produced. Capable of so much more then he has provided I feel that he has only made 5 truly entertaining movies his whole career. "Foul Play," "Vacation," "Fletch," "Christmas Vacation" and this which is by far his best work. Yes I realize that I omitted "Caddyshack" but I go back and forth on that film and still don't think it is that great though it does have some laughs. I do have sort of a soft spot for "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" but that's more being a fan of John Carpenter.

"Funny Farm" has a terrific screenplay in which each scene provides the set up and pay off for some great laughs. It helps that Chase worked with the best director he ever worked with in George Roy Hill. It's the little moments in the film I love the most like the dog with the bandage on his head, the first dog simply running off never to be seen (except for one small glimpse later) again, and his wife's reaction to his first novel called "The Big Heist" a terribly original (in his mind) story of four poker buddies planning the perfect heist.

There's also the little pieces of dialogue that are so funny. My favorite is when the movers are trying to find the town of Redbud and happen upon an old man sitting on his porch"

Movers - Hey, Mac, do you know where Redbud is?
Man - How'd you know my name is Mac?
Movers - Lucky guess.
Man - Then why don't you guess where Redbud is?

This film never fails to make me laugh hard and it was a nice change of pace for Chase not just clowning around but playing a full three dimensional character. This is an sadly overlooked comedy classic.

Funny Money - due out soon.

The buzz is it's really good.

When watching the movie, I got this image in my head of the director pushing Chevy down into that chair in his office and saying "None of you're stupid 'funny' stuff, just read the f---ing line."
I think he's fine when he's hemmed in by the writer and director. And truth be told, I think he wasn't as restrained as he should've been in Vacation...

Chevy has had several great memorable movies and even just having 5 or 6 is a big accomplishment, few actors have a bunch of great movies. My favorites are
"Seems like old Times"
"Caddyshack"
"Vacation"
"European Vacation"
"Christmas Vacation"
"Spies Like Us"
"Funny Farm"

"Modern Problems" was memorable but not a great movie and I was not a big fan of the "Fletch" movies but they did have some funny scenes, "Invisible Man" was decent but not really funny.

"Nothing But Trouble" was awful

Chevy has had some pretty bad ones and some average ones but I think his carrier in the 80's and early 90's was still pretty impressive and he is one of my favorite comedic actors, it is a tradition that we watch "Funny Farm" around Christmas and "Christmas Vacation" as well as "Christmas Story" on Christmas Eve every year and I know several people who watch "Christmas Vacation" every year on Christmas or Christmas Eve.

It wouldn't be Christmas without it - really. I try to leave on the shelf all year so as to, hopefully, be taken by surprise again with some of the lines.
As I get older that seems to get easier every year - hell, by the time I'm 65
it should be like a brand new movie to me - can't wait !!
Ah sh*t, what movie are we talking about again ??

I just saw a short interview piece with Chevy where he said that he definitely felt that this was his best movie he ever made.

I'm not sure what is about this movie but it really got me. I honestly don't think it's hilarious or anything like that, I just really like it. It honestly made me want to move to Vermont someday.

Where is that interview you saw?

I wouldn't say this is his "masterpiece" that would go to Vacation, Christmas and European (I know a lot of people dont like European but I crack up every time I watch it). But besides all three of those movies this would be my next favorite Chevy movie... I don't know what it is about this movie that I find so good, I guess I just like the subtle humor in it. "The squirell is me isn't it?"
It's probably not for everyone but I love it. The way that Chevy delivers his lines are just classic to me. Another factor that probably has to do with my liking is that I grew up watching this movie with my Dad along with the Vacation movies. It's definitely a matter of opinion but Chevy movies will always hold a special place in my heart. He's one of a kind
