'Wealthy' College Student?

Something I've never understood, lots of the movie reviewers/critics described McCarthy's character as a "wealthy" college student, but the scenes of his home show he clearly is not, he's just average middle class.

It was his initial fiancee who came from a wealthy family and a few of the friends in the same social circle -- the girl's home with the the indoor pool and fountained front lawn -- were the wealthy ones.

How could anyone come to a conclusion that Matt Larkin was a wealthy college student?

His father did own a pretty nice boat that a middle class person would not necessarily own.

That hardly makes them wealthy. That makes them boat owners.

the boat seemed like his dad's prize toy, maybe an anomaly.
larkin is notably the only one among his friends who works and drives a jalopy.
the impression i got was that he felt more comfortable with the ringwald character because they were closer in socioeconomic standing. he seemed to be in an uncomfortable middle between the other characters.

Although not on par with his fiancee, they're more than just average middle class.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.
