Why does it require a director's cut? There's no reason to think that it was edited against Polanski's wishes.

reply

yes, there is:

"Due to studio pressure, 15 minutes were trimmed from the original running time and a new ending was shot." (from the trivia section)

reply

Right. But if this director´s cut really exists and Polanski still wants it to be released, then they should digitalize it and bring it on the big screen first.

reply

They would probably be more prone to remaking it with teenagers for the big screen and releasing a dvd version with the "director's cut" stamp.

Please consider reapplying to the program.

Id be okay with WB just finally releasing this film in a Anamorphic Widescreen release... that fullscreen DVD isnt worth the $4.00 bin that its sitting in. At this point Ive had no reason to update the VHS I bought of this back in 1989.

The trivia section is hardly irrefutable proof that any re-editing went on. It's not something that seems to be common knowledge, as is usually the case with films taken away from their directors (see the career of Sam Peckinpah).
