Horribly underrated

This movie is a little masterpiece, not just because of its exciting atmosphere.

The acting of almost all of its characters is incredible, especially Harrison Ford deserved an Oscar for that!

reply

I totally agree. And I also think that Harrison Ford should come over to (good) european directors more often when his carreer is going in every possible crazy direction... I think he could do something nice teaming with Verhoeven maybe?... Or Michael Winterbottom? Or maybe I'm just daydreaming and great American actors don't really care about small European countries...

reply

Me too. I've always really liked this film, it's hugely entertaining and even though I've already seen it several times I can never change the channel whenever it comes on TCM. It has a nicely tense Hitchcockian atmosphere, great use of Parisian locations, and some humour along the way. It's definitely one of Polanski's most underrated and overlooked movies.

reply

What happen to this film is that people who watched expected it to be a thriller or an action movie.I totally agree thats the most underrated movie i have ever saw in this site .

reply

Yes, I agree that this movie is underrated. In fact, most of Polanski's movies are underrated (in my opinion), I guess not everyone likes the specific 'climate' of his movies.

reply

When I first saw this, I had no idea it was a Polanski film. I agree that it is vastly underrated.

When I first saw Polanski's movies in the 1960's he was an actor (and writer) in some very strange Polish films that had the surreal psychological air of Ingmar Bergman. When he put out Repulsion and Cul-de-sac, those were two of the strangest movies ever made, right at the start of the British monopoly on culture due to the Beatles, a time everyone knew was in for a huge change. This guy Polanski was so innovative he had to take on a badboy image and a guarded strangeness of a Phil Spector. He has none of the American characteristics that make for the popularity of a Clint Eastwood acor/director/writer. His sexual promiscuity made him even less likeable than Charlie Chaplin, whose sexual escapades with underage nymphettes ruined his popularity he had so successfully achieved. And watching him slice up Jack Nicholson's nose in Chinatown did nothing to endear him to the American public. The truth is, he's up there with Stanley Kubrick and even Hitchcock in his artistic prowess. This is the cinematic artist Americans love to hate, but proudly stands defiant and continues to make challenging films, he being at the pinnacle of his art.

same here , underrated movie from a master.

reply

"underrated movie from a master."

A master child raper. Seriously how can people overlook that fact and watch films or make them with a convicted child rapist. Oh her's a good director, we'll let that incident slide. WTF is wrong with people? Principles take a back seat to film?

reply

"He has none of the American characteristics that make for the popularity of a Clint Eastwood acor/director/writer."

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. What American characteristics of Clint Eastwood? Why would we expect Polanski to have them? What's the purpose of comparing the two?

"And watching him slice up Jack Nicholson's nose in Chinatown did nothing to endear him to the American public."

I'm pretty sure movie-goers can distinguish between a fictional character and the person playing him, especially if that person also directed the film you are enjoying.

I quite agree. I was catching up on some 80's Ford this week. Witness is great, but Frantic is even better. Very good movie.

This movie is one of my top10 of all times. Best characterization of the 80's.

reply

Agree with everyone about this film being vastly underrated. I watch every time its on and I'm never bored. The music, the atmosphere, the location, the story, and the actors Ford and Emannuelle is just outstanding. Their chemistry is fantastic.

December 2007, Alvin and The Chipmunks just became relevant...again!

reply

It's a shame they don't make anymore thrillers like this one; it's interesting, intense, with great atmosphere and humor, without any special effects that i hate so much.

reply

oh totally true I really like The Fugitive and this was just like it. Roman Polanski directing and Ennio Morricone with the music, great piece of filmmaking

reply

This was much superior to The Fugitive! (which is a decent movie for granted)

But to bring it back on topic I'm also VERY impressed this movie hasn't got any single award nomination at all.

I completely agree, and the way the film has been treated by the studio by allowing it to be callously crammed onto a DVD, unremastered and in Pan&Scan of all things, is nothing less than negligence. It's an insult to the actors, the film makers, and the people who loved the movie enough to purchase it.

I was appalled by how terrible the transfer was, and Letterbox should be standard on all DVDs. Why in the world have we all purchased these Wide-screen TV's if they're going to keep making Pan&Scan DVDs?

reply

it is underrated but not HORRIBLY underrated!!! the movie is good for the first hour when the wife goes missing and hes trying to find out what happened... but the last half hour or so stretches credibility to say the least!! and the plot with the nuclear device and all that ! but a good movie overall

reply

Well, I think it is HORRIBLY underrated. I mean, there are blockbusters now rated 9 (look at 'The dark knight' for example!!??), and this movie is a classic. I watch it every time it's on tv and I love it every time. Acting, directing, atmosphere, everything is so good, no need for special effects.

reply

Not even a CGI car! Just a good ole' suspenseful movie with good acting all around and beautiful tracks to listen too.

reply

hmmchecked this out because of the high rating, but was sadly not to impressed, very simular to "unknown" although i think unknown was much more entertaining, , didnt think it was terrible just not worthy of the rating it gets here...
