What was the point of the....Spoilers

...opening car accident?

This movie was decent for a Polanski film; it's very much a pastiche of film noir; however, there were a lot shots/scenes that didn't really add up - IE. The dance sequence, couple having sex, etc. - not to mention, many scenes meandered in a way that didn't add to the story or character, but atmosphere. Polanski's films are usually very good at this, but I think he went a little too paced.

the answer is very simple,
it is like a premonition or "sign" that bad things would happen.

Wasn't it just a flat tyre? At any rate, it was all about things not getting off to a smooth start in France.

I agree with you though about the need for better editing, especially in the back half of the film. Things dragged on for too long, too often after the point had been made. Frantic is a good 10 - 15 minutes overlong IMO. Harrison Ford himself was critical of the film's non-titular pace.

Red Herring, I guess.
