25th Anniversary

This movie opened in theaters on February 26, 1988, and this Tuesday will be its 25th anniversary. I remember when it was first out, I had just turned 20 and was in my sophmore year of college. My mother and sister, who were very big Harrison Ford fans, did not go to see it in theaters, but when a local video store closed in late 1988 and sold all their movies at a discounted rate, my mother asked this store to save Frantic for her. I then watched it on our VCR in early 1989, and really liked it, it became my favorite movie of 1988. And later in 1989 all three of us watched it on our VCR. She liked it allright, but said the only reason she did was because Harrison Ford was in it. But I watched it some more times on our VCR in the early 1990s, and then last fall brought it at a DVD store and have watched it several times on my DVD player in my apartment. And I plan to watch it this Tuesday for its 25th anniversary.

Good story. I didn't catch Frantic when it was release and regret it now. I was a teen who thought only of Ford in Star Wars and Indiana Jones. I think I first seen this movie on HBO back in the 90's and was hook.

What drew me to Frantic was the excitment of being in a foreign country like France and experience all of Walker adventures. Except for the violence, I wanna go to a nightclub that plays Grace Jones, "Strange" and dance with a beautiful French woman.

For MY Frantic late anniversary tribute, I'm celebrating it during my birthday(I'm off from work) with an all-day marathon. Guess I'll need plenty of Chinese food and wine!

I celebrate Frantic once every week / maybe every two weeks by rewatching the dance club scene towards the end.
Love that scene so much I haven't gotten tired of it yet. The one-take dance, with Richard being unable to catch up with Michelle's sultry dance moves. Grace Jones' Libertango, the fact it was filmed from a low angle in one take, the disco lights, the interesting looking and behaving extras, the criminal onlookers- all those elements make give this scene a powerful vibe, almost to the point of being hypnotising. Love the fact how the scene starts out with Richard being caught off guard by the Doctor he had met in Cairo spotting him in the beginning and ending with him confidently negotiating with the terrorists, having all the trumps in his hand.

And all the driving scenes featuring rear-projection and the magical early morning/ dawn light situations they're set in are beautiful to look at, too. Again, Libertango adds so much to those scenes.
