Disappointing ending? *SPOILERS*

Just saw and LOVED this film, but...
... anyone else find the ending a bit disappointing? I expected something more sisnister about the wife, like she's a criminal herself or something.

reply

That would've made an interesting twist but adding that element would have overloaded an already good movie!

The interesting aspect to this twist is that this was the original intention of the script (the wife being an agent), but then the studio had the director rewrite it. I would love to see the original version which must have existed at some time as it was screened for test audiences.

the only thing about the ending that dissapointed me, was michelle dieng and harrison ford acting like he didnt give a *beep*

Most Polanski films build toward a galling ending that pulls the rug from under your feet and makes you reflect on the often slow paced previous two hours. Once Rosemary’s Baby ends, you keep returning to the film (either mentally or on disc) to re-examine all of the strange little details in light of the new revelation. Trying to process just how evil certain characters were all along keeps the horror alive in your head long after the credits roll.

With Frantic I was waiting for a shocking ending, such as the wife being involved all along, but never got one. It was a fun ride but fell flat, and I got the sense that a meaningful and disturbing ending was nixed by the studio in favour of something predictable.

Does anyone have more details on the original ending?

reply

the ending was bleak but realistic.....the smuggler dies because she's greedy, young and beautiful. The garbage truck at the end is Roman's way of saying that the world continues to revolve, even in the face of death and heartbreak.

how about the bad guys just let ford throw the gadget into the river like that without stabbing/shooting him in retribution? they just let him walk past them without doing anything! terrible - very unrealistic.

The guys at the end were Israeli agents. Presumably their main goal was to prevent the Arabs from getting their hands on the device, not to get it for themselves.
