Two English-speaking tourists check into a Paris hotel, looking forward to seeing the sights. The next morning, one of them is missing, and the hotel staff are adamant that only one person checked in, and deny seeing anyone else. The remaining tourist then embarks on solving the mystery. This is the plot of So Long at the Fair, made in 1950 with Jean Simmons and Dirk Bogarde. I am amazed that no previous posters gave commented on the similarities to Frantic.
shareI agree "So Long at the Fair" has a similar set up, but ultimately it veers off into a much less Hitchcock territory by it's end. The 1950 movie ended up being more a a mystery puzzler, whereas Polanski's film was a thriller all the way.
